“Hydra Veil” by Illamasqua

Part Hydrator + Part Primer =?

DSCF2735

I got to know about “Hydra Veil” by Illamasqua from Wayne Goss on You Tube some time ago. And although after his review I got interested in the product, the price of “Hydra Veil” put me off and after some consideration I decided not to buy it. But recently I had a chance to test this product! I’ve got a sample of “Hydra Veil” with my purchases and the amount of it was more than enough to see all the pros and cons of this highly rated primer & hydrator.

You know, all this time I’ve had this bothering question on my mind: “Is Hydra Veil really worth 45 euros or not?!”. Let’s see…

General Description

“Hydra Veil” is advertised as 2 in 1 product that is part hydrator and part primer. The consistency is quite unusual, it looks and feels very different from what I’ve used before; the texture reminds me more of a jelly, rather than of a skin care product. When it is applied, it leaves a bit sticky feeling on the skin, but it does not cause any discomfort and dries down quite quickly. On YT video Wayne Goss was complaining about the strong fragrance (it was the only thing he didn’t like about “Hydra Veil”), but the sample I’ve got hardly has any fragrance at all, which makes me think that the formula of “Hydra Veil” was slightly changed.

Part Hydrator

“Hydra Veil” adds a lot of moisture to my skin.  I literally feel like my skin satisfies its thirstiness with water, as it instantly looks and feels smoother and more hydrated. But can “Hydra Veil” be used instead of a day cream? Well, I believe this product lacks some things to be on the same shelf with a proper skin care. Probably it is odd, but I’d compare a proper day cream with the food full of essential vitamins and minerals and “Hydra Veil” with a glass of water. That’s how I personally feel the difference. I think “Hydra Veil” is good only as an addition to a day cream.
I also tried to use “Hydra Veil” under my eyes to reduce puffiness in the morning, but unfortunately I didn’t notice any effect.

Part Primer

The foundation glides much smoother over “Hydra Veil” rather than on bare skin, I do feel a huge difference. But it does not make the foundation look dramatically better or make the makeup last any longer. Once I applied “Hydra Veil” only on half of my face and left the other half without any primer and guess what… the foundation looked and lasted 100% the same on both sides, which is ridiculous considering the price of “Hydra Veil”.

Packaging

That’s how a full sized version looks like:

HydraVeil

I’ll be briefI do not like the packaging at all. Come on…. What is the sense of playing with a spatula and a jar, when there are products in tubes and pump containers?!

Conclusion

After all the excitement about this product, I was happy that I got it in a sample size and didn’t waste my money on it. To me, “Hydra Veil” completely fails as a primer. And although it hydrates very well, I don’t think it is enought to justify the price tag.

The thing that would instantly turn me away from this product is the jar and spatula. Seriously? I’m not about to spend an extra 60 seconds fooling with that in the morning, haha.

That is such weird packaging!! That alone would have turned me away… I wonder why they decided to go with it. Don’t you just love when you have a sample size and that’s all you will really need of it? If you are in the market for a good primer like product I love Josie Maran’s Brightening Face Balm :) It is wooooonderful! xo

It’s a shame this fails as a primer as it sounds amazing. Great post. x
