My HG primers for fall/winter

IMG_20151001_125437_1

A good primer is such an excellent product to solve some specific skin problems prior to wearing foundation. Nowadays there are many different types of primers on the market. And although each primer has a different formula, all of them form a smooth film on top of the skin, on which foundation glides on more evenly and stays for longer.

Pro Application Tips:

1)  Apply just a pea-size amount of a primer in a thin layer. If it is applied in a thick layer (especially when a primer is silicone-based), the foundation is more prone to slide off your face rather than helping your makeup last all day. A little goes a long way!

2)  Do not massage primer into the skin like a moisturizer, as rubbing causes primer to break down. Apply primer with smoothing motions to create an even surface on top of the skin.

In this post I’ll talk about my two favorite primers that I like to use in fall/winter, when the skin is more prone to dehydration and dullness.

“Instant Beauty Radiance Booster” by Dr Lewinn’s

Dr__LeWinn__039_s_Instant_Beauty_Radiance_Booster_50g_1372083740

For whom:

For anyone whose skin needs extra hydration. Although it says that it is suitable for all skin types, I find that it is somewhat heavy for oily skin (at least in a humid climate).

Performance:

1) Hydration. “Radiance booster” is not only smoothing out the surface of the skin, but also acts as a moisturizing skin care product. This primer is based on Aloe Vera leaf juice and partially absorbed by the skin. That’s why whenever the skin is dehydrated or I have a feeling that foundation may emphasize any dry patches, I reach for “Radiance Booster”. It always gives skin some extra moisture.

* If there are too many dry patches, use an exfoliator and a nourishing cream prior to a primer application.

2) Foundation staying power. Foundation glides on smoother over the primer, looks a bit better and lasts the whole day. Even if I use a drug store foundation, in 6-7 hours the makeup looks as fresh, as if I’ve just applied it. Not mentioning, that the skin feels well hydrated and comfortable all day long.

Radiance Booster by Dr Lewinn’s can be used as a primer and as a face mask; it is also suitable for under eye area.  In some cases it can be applied even instead of a moisturizer if the skin is not too dry; or it can be mixed with foundation (50/50). However, from all possible uses I prefer to apply it over a regular moisturizer as a primer for combination/dry or dehydrated skin.

Cons:

1) Radiance. In spite of its name “Radiance Booster” and all my love to this primer, I do not notice it adds any extra glow to the skin or brightens the complexion, the skin looks pretty natural, nothing too dewy.

2) It is not a pick-me-up product for tired, stressed skin (like some ads promote it). The primer neither instantly firms nor dramatically reduces the appearance of wrinkles. You may notice that the skin looks better only with time if the product is used regularly on every day basis as an addition to your skin care.

Beauty Flash Balm by Clarins

Clarins

For whom:

For mature or tired-looking aging skin. If you are still in your mid-20th or younger and your skin is firm and supple, I would not recommend this primer, as there is a high chance you won’t see the effect.

Performance:

1) Tightening effect. You start to feel a tightening effect in 10-15 minutes and the effect keeps on the same level for 2 – 3 hours. After that, it starts slowly decreasing and the skin comes back to its normal relaxed condition in around 4 – 6 hours. I also apply the balm on crow’s feet. In case the wrinkles are not too deep, the Beauty Flash Balm tightens the skin and makes the crow’s feet almost invisible. If the wrinkles are deep, the Balm just softens their appearance.

*In spite the balm does make difference to the skin, the tightening effect is not equal to lifting surgery (just in case).

2) Brightening effect. It does add natural healthy glow to the skin. I see the difference mostly on dull skin or on dark under eye circles. Although it does not conceal for obvious reasons, it still eliminates the tired look of the skin.

Beauty Flash Balm by Clarins can be also used as a face mask. And it’s a good alternative for oily skin, on which the Balm can feel too heavy as a primer. However, in this case the tightening effect usually lasts less.

Application

When you apply Beauty Flash Balm keep in mind the lifting effect, smooth primer with your fingers up and sideways. Be quick, do not let the primer dry and apply foundation immediately in the same way as the primer. The Beauty Flash Balm and foundation have to cling to each other. It is important not to rub, not to massage, not using wet sponges or buffing brushes, apply both the primer and foundation with your hands, otherwise the primer can peel off.

Con:

Beauty Flash Balm shouldn’t be used daily; it is a pick-me-up product for occasions (can be used 2-3 times a week only).

Recent Discovery!

For the most fresh and natural-looking finish I like to apply Vinoperfect Tinted Moisturizer by Caudalie just after the Beauty Flash Balm by Clarins. This moisturizer is quite a new product on the market. It gives the coverage of sheer to light foundation (pretty enough to even out the skin tone) and the finish looks 100% like skin. When it is applied over  Beauty Flash Balm by Clarins, the skin look as if after hours of relaxing SPA treatments without even a hint of makeup on the skin. I find that these two products work awesome together!

Such great review and tips! I have the habit of sometimes rubbing my primer in too much, now I’ll be more mindful to not do that!

I hope you have an amazing day, girlie!

I absolutely love primers and I usually go for something that’s both moisturizing and blurring. I have never heard of the brand Dr Lewinn’s! You learn something new every day :)

I don’t use primers. I am bad at all of this, I usually put a quick makeup and there is no time for it. Plus, I need to find a good primer as my skin is very oily and that is a very difficult task for me :)

I am so bad at using primer, it is the step I always skip and then regret it later throughout the day when my makeup has completely vanished.

I don’t use face primer on a daily basis, but when I do I choose a mattifying one, as my skin is very oily.

I honestly should invest in a good primer, even though I hardly wear foundation anyway, haha

I am really bad at primers, I really struggle to see the difference when I use one, but your advices are great, as I was clearly using too much of it sometimes and my foundation flaked off!
