Vichy Aqualia Thermal Awakening Eye Balm

I have been suffering from puffy eyes for the last few years and though I blame mostly hay fever and sinus problems for that, I have also noticed that with age my under eye skin becomes more prone to puffiness in general. For example, if I eat too salty food or I don’t drink enough water during the day it always results in puffy eyes in the morning.

In spite I realize that the problem should be solved by reducing salt, drinking water, getting plenty of sleep, etc., I am still constantly looking for some miracle eye products that help to reduce the swollen look around the eyes.

One of my recent purchases for swollen eyes was Vichy Aqualia Thermal Awakening Eye Balm. After reading the following claim on the package, I felt obliged to check out this innovation by Vichy. Dynamic hydration technology sounded interesting and quite promising!

Vichy Aqualia Thermal Awakening Eye Balm

I have been using Vichy Aqualia Thermal Awakening Eye Balm for the last 1.5 months and now I’m ready to share my experience about this product.

General Description

Consistency/Texture

Vichy Aqualia Thermal Awakening Eye Balm

The consistency of Vichy Awakening Eye Balm is not actually of a balm (I expect a balm to be more creamy and nourishing). To my opinion, it is more close to a gel like texture, as the product is very lightweight and kind of melts into water when touching the skin.

Feeling & Finish

The balm fully corresponds to its’ name “awakening”, as it feels pleasantly refreshing and cooling to the skin, leaving it with a moist smooth finish. It does not look shiny on the skin, nor feels any heavy.

Applying & Absorption

The eye balm is quickly absorbed if applied with massage motions  – I am gently tapping with the ring fingertips from inner to outer corners (the fingers must be relaxed when performing these movements). I make 6 eye circles and then finish with a few stroking movements. It helps to stimulate the skin tissues and comfort the puffy eyes. Just bear in mind that it is very important not to drag the skin when making an eye massage, as it is a very delicate area.

What to expect from Vichy Aqualia Thermal Awakening Eye Balm

Hydration

Vichy Awakening Eye Balm provides a long-lasting hydration and prevents dryness, it literary feels as if the skin is drinking water when I’m applying the balm. It contains sodiumhyaluronate (= the salt form of hyaluronic acid), known to replenish the skin with water and it does the work exceptionally well, as in terms of hydration the difference is instantly visible. I would highly recommend this eye product to anyone whose skin is dehydrated.

Note: The balm can make the dehydration lines around the eyes look less noticeable, as when the skin is plumped with moisture its surface is always smoother. But if the lines are caused because of aging,  Awakening Eye Balm won’t make a significant difference in reducing deep wrinkles.

Freshness

The eye balm refreshes the skin, which is a very pleasant feeling when the eyes are tired. I’m not sure if the eyes look more wide awake after the balm, but they definitely feel so.

Antioxidant effect

The balm contains caffeine, which is an effective antioxidant that prevents cell damage from free radicals. It would have been better of course if there were more antioxidants in Awakening Eye Balm, but well… one is always better than none.

Restoring function

Vichy Aqualia Thermal Awakening Eye Balm contains glycerin that is known to restore the skin’s protective barrier and to improve its’ function.

Note: if you live in a dry climate, there are some things about this ingredient you may want to take into consideration – some scientific studies show that products with glycerin work best in high humidity climates, as when the climate is dry, there is not enough water to attract from the atmosphere and glycerin starts drawing moisture from dermis (=the inner layer of the skin) up to epidermis (=the surface layer of the skin).

Dark circles

If the skin around the eyes appears dull due to dehydration, there is a high chance that Vichy Aqualia Thermal Awakening Eye Balm will solve the problem by removing the cause of it. However, if the cause is different, the balm won’t make any difference in reducing dark circles.

Puffiness

Although I haven’t noticed that the balm 100% reduces or prevents the formation of bags, it is the only eye product I can use when my eyes are already puffy, as anything else seems too creamy and nourishing for under eye puffiness. I like how Awakening Eye Balm refreshes the skin and moisturizes it without any heavy feeling.

Extra benefits

  1. Paraben free
  2. Oil free
  3. Fragrance free
  4. Formulated for sensitive skin – tested under dermatological and ophthalmological control

Conclusion

Overall, I am happy with Vichy Awakening Eye Balm. Even though it does not counteract puffiness (at least in my case), I still believe it is a good choice for puffy eyes because of its lightweight formula and refreshing feeling. Besides, it works excellent for dehydrated skin! By the way, the price is also pretty affordable :)

P.S. Cold or iced compresses (e.g. iced chamomile tea or chilled chamomile tea bags) help to cool and sooth puffy eyes, just do not put ice directly onto the skin, but wrap it in a cotton towel. Also, do not use any heavy eye creams, opt for eye gels that have decongestant, cooling and tightening effect.

Awww shame this hasn’t really helped with the puffiness. I tend to suffer more from dark circles than puffiness though. I wouldn’t mind trying to see if it worked for me

Olena, thank you for this honest & informative write up. Although not puffy, I do suffer from sunken in, dark circles around my eyes and think the hydration formula might help. Excellent write up & photos! I always learn so much by reading your blog :)

Finding the right eye cream is proving rather hard for me, because many of them irritate my eye area (not the Vichy ones, though).

Maybe you should try it another month to see if it makes any difference, sometimes it takes ages for products to work. Even if it doesn’t make much difference on puffy eyes, it still keeps your eye area hydrated which is great :)
